How to change the screen width on MW2?

I just got a new screen and wanted to play some MW2 But it is squished and it has two black bars on the sides. Changing the resolution causes DirectX to shut MW2 down.

Answer:
When in-game press start and then go to optionns. From there there should be the option to alter the screen size.
