How do I get a flat panel monitor to work with my computer?

  • I just switched my large CRT monitor with a flat panel one and when I turned on my computer, I got a blank screen. I know the flat panel worked on another computer I had. Nothing on the computer works, the mouse will not light up, the USB ports will not work either. The monitor reads that it is in safe mode. It says to hit any key but that does not bring the screen back. Should I switch back to the large CRT monitor or how can I fix it?

    If it’s saying it’s in safe mode, that is your computer, not the monitor. Restart your computer (with the monitor unplugged) and then when the computer boots back up, try hooking them up. Cheers, Ron Windows Outreach Team

You have to install the drivers for the monitor!

My boyfriend had the same problem. He had to use an HD cable from his laptop to the monitor. but I think that's only if your computer is HD and/or the monitor is HD.

This sounds like the LCD is trying to go to a resolution and/or a refresh rate it doesn't support, so it goes to safe mode. One thing to try is to reconnect the CRT, set the resolution to 800x600 or 1024x768 since all modern monitors support those, then switch to the LCD. Adjust the LCD to your preference once you see the screen. Often you can switch monitors without turning off the computer, but it's not a bad idea to shut it down first just to be safe. Change the refresh rate, use your old monitor to do this, go to desktop>right click> display settings>advanced settings>monitor > refresh rate, change it down. these instructions are for Vista, but XP should be the same in control panel :)
