LCD monitor question.

Question about my LCD monitor?

  • I have a 24" Samsung 244T LCD monitor and I've noticed lately that while playing some games I occasionally get a line that goes horizontally across the screen about half way down. If I let the game sit still nothing shows up but if I move the top and bottom shear and look like that middle "line" (No actual line visible) is seperating the two. Over time the "line" slowly moves down and off the screen and it doesn't do it again for some time. I have an Nvidia GTX 260 so my video card is very sufficient for this. Another thing, not sure how important this is but my native resolution is 1920 x 1200 and these games I noticed that line in were running at 1600 x 1200. I had the monitor scaling the image out to fill. This monitor certainly shouldn't be the culprit as it was not some cheap thing from the local store either. I have played other games such as Call of Duty 4 at 1920 x 1200 for hours and I don't recall ever seeing any such problem. Is it something to do with me running the game at that resolution or is there some other cause? I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3. Thanks!

  • Answer:

You're suffering from Vertical De-sync. Try enabling 'V-Sync' or 'Vertical Sync' in your game's settings, note that you can also do this in Nvidia Control Panel Edit: Also make sure that since you're playing at such a high resolution, you use a DVI cable instead of VGA since VGA has a serious bandwidth limit and DVI lets you go to very high resolutions without problems. If your monitor goes to 1920x1200 then it most probably has DVI support and probably came with a DVI cable.

I would format, reinstall drivers, make sure drivers are up to date, make sure your comp's spyware and virus free.. If the line still comes up then it's a hardware issue with either the graphics card or the monitor. Swap out each to see which one's the problem. I have a samsung myself and get a horizontal line when loading games sometimes, but never in game. Samsung's generally top notch in terms of quality.
