How to check if my monitor is on?

How do i check to see if my monitor is VGA?

  • well i got this graphics card which says i need a VGA compatible monitor, the thing is my graphics card, once it is installed, the monitor turns off right after start up. so i need to know if my monitor is VGA or not.

  • Answer:

VGA is the type of cable running from the computer tho the monitor. vga is shaped like a trapezoid and dvi would be like a rectangle. most monitors have vga. but it seems like youve plugged a cable into the card that goes to the monitor anyway and it should work. that might not be your problem

I suppose you check if it has a 15-pin VGA connector to the computer.

look at the back if a blue cable plugs into it its VGA if a white cable goes into it its DVI

If it plugs into the card, its vga compatible. You are looking at other problems if it shuts down. Before you get too carried away tho, just try turning the monitor back on. If the monitor lite is on but no screen, boot in safe mode and see if it lites up. The card may simply be misconfigured and you will need to adjust the card settings in the display panel.

If your monitor is less than 15 years old, then it's VGA. VGA came out in 1987 and was commonplace by the early '90's.

Does your monitor have a color display and is it 15 years old or newer? If so then it is almost certainly VGA compatible. Is the video card new? Did your monitor used to work with your old video card? If so, then the problem is probably with your video card or driver software instead of the monitor. When you say it turns off right after startup, do you mean as it's booting up or after you get into windows? If you see graphics and text (such as from the BIOS) as it boots up before it gets into Windows then the monitor and videocard are probably working and the driver software is flawed. If you see no graphics except for maybe some graphics generated by the monitor itself (when it turns on) then the problem could be a bad video card or a bad video cable (or a mainboard failure at the card slot). Monitors often go into standby mode or shut off if they do not receive a video signal within a certain amount of time. So, try accessing the On Screen Display on the monitor to see if it is working. If you do see the boot-up and suspect the problem is with windows, then boot up into Safe Mode and install or re-install the drivers for the new card. Or, if those are installed, you might try using a generic VGA driver.
