LCD monitor 50000:1 or 20000:1?
-
Is there really any difference? I want to buy a lcd monitor, I got two choices one got 20000:1 and another one 50000:1. I know that the higher the contrast ratio is, the better the monitor is suppose to be, but I just can't find any difference between them. So my question is, is there any need for the contrast ratio to be so high?

Answer:
The contrast ratio is a measure of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that the system is capable of producing. Basically higher is generally better, but not always.

you won't notice much of a difference, unless you're profession requires the absolute best resolution monitor you can find. If you are a photographer or a hardcore gamer, then get the 50000:1. if not, you're better off getting the most likely cheaper 20000:1.

What you have quoted is the dynamic contrast ratio, which to some extend is misleading. The real contrast ratio is the ratio between the brightest white to the darkest black. I do not know why, but manufacturers are not quoting this figure. There is no real difference in the figures given by you. One more important point is whether the monitor is HD, ie. High Definition display. This is 1920 x 1080 p. The p stands for progressive scan, which means that all the data of the image is displayed in one go. If your monitor can display high definition then you will be able to watch HD video clips and movies on your monitor. Many web sites like youtube.com, vimeo.com etc. have large number of video clips in High Definition format.

contrast ration is the last thing i'd be looking for in a monitor. 1st, i'd be looking at the resolution 2nd, size 3rd, refresh rate (especially if you want to use Nvidia 3d vision) 4th, brand 5th, features 6th Contrast Ratio. it's good to google the brand of monitor you want ot get with the words 'review'. the only time you might need to put the contrast Ratio higher up on the list is if your monitor is opposite a window, making the light hit the screen directly. even in a bright room, my samsung Syncmaster T240 which has 20000:1 you can see the screen on quite a low setting, if i turn it up it's very bright, infact might be a little too bright in some places.

like the previous answer the higher the better.. but only compare to the same brand. each brand has its own way of testing this so a computer screen that claims to be 100:1 could be measured differently than one that claims to be 10000:1 but they could be the same. just be warned about that. i think either screen would look good.. but if they are the same brand i would recommend the higher ratio.
