Use HDTV as a monitor?
-
basically I have two questions. (1) what do I need to connect my computer to my HDTV (2) how do I find out what kind of slot my computer slot...PCI PCI-E..etc I have a emachine el1331g http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=EL1331G-01w and a Mitsubishi HDTV model # WD-60735 http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/product/WD60735 I'm trying to figure out how to hook my computer up to it. It doesn't appear to have a DVI output. Guy at microcenter told me I needed to find out what kind of slot my computer has available and would have to install a new one with a DVI output. Said my HDTV can only connect through an HDMI cable. Right now I'm just thinking of doing it. I'm trying to get all the information I can at the moment. how difficult it's going to be, kind of slots I have, how much it's going to cost me etc. thanks

Yup, the guy you talked to was right. You can't connect your computer's VGA (which is analog only) to an HDTV's HDMI (which is digital only). You will need a video card that has either a DVI or HDMI port. You need to open up your computer and see if it has a PCIExpress 16x slot, which looks like this: http://www.entraide-petite-enfance.com/Tutos/CG/PCI-AGP-PCIe.jpg If it does, you need to buy a PCIExpress 16x video card that has a DVI or HDMI port so you can connect to your HDTV's HDMI. Your computer is also one of those slim cases, so you also need to check if a full-height card will work or does it need one of those half-height ("low profile") video cards. EDITED TO ADD: Running GPU-Z tells you NOTHING USEFUL for your situation. You need to open up your computer and LOOK AT THE SLOT. And NO, a DVI-to-VGA adapter will NOT work. You CANNOT connect an analog VGA signal source to a digital HDMI input. DIGITAL IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ANALOG, no matter what adapters you try to use. It will NEVER work. Don't even think it.

As mentioned before, HDMI cable is the best way to go. Before I had an HDTV, I used a PC to Video Converter which worked pretty well but didn't have the audio. I had to use my computer speakers for audio, which was fine because I have great speakers & a subwoofer for my PC. I paid about $40 for the converter on EBay but they're available in stores for around $100! The HDMI cable is a much better buy at about $30 or $40 depending on the length of the wire & where you buy it. I find the quality is better with the HDMI cable as well.

I use a HDMI cable from my computer to my HDTV. It works awesome, and if you have a laptop, and choose "nothing happens when you close the lid", close the laptop, and you will be able to change the resoulution to Full HD. :) But yeah, HDMI cable. (:

I have a hdtv with dvi, vga, and hdmi outputs. my laptop only has vga. so... i got a vga cable and an audio cable and hooked it up at the back of my tv. if i had the hdmi cable, i wouldn't need the audio cable. and for the quality, hdmi is better because if your tv supports it, you can have up to 1080p. as for the vga, it does the job for you but it does not have the same quality as full hd so..., ur choice. and often, vga cables are cheaper than hdmi, but as i said, if u want better quality and less hassle, hdmi is the better choice, also with hdmi, u wouldnt need an audio cable
THAT'S EPIC!!!
