White squares on my monitor?

Dual monitor set up help?

  • well, i recently got these 2 monitors and i dont know what to do with this old LCD so i decided to try something called dual monitor. My 8800 graphic card has 2 monitor ports, so i guess that it can support 2 monitors. So question #1: If you don't know what the ports look like then go to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150315&Tpk=8800 and look at the second picture. That port with the bunch of squares. yeah. So my video card only came with one monitor cable converter and i am wondering if i can use this DVI cable which came with the new monitor that looks like (and does) it can fit into the port of my video card. Would I be able to use that DVI cable to use the monitor? If it can then move on to the next question. Is it possible to view 2 seperate windows screens with my 2 monitors? Such as, I would be playing a game, but on another screen. I would be able to browse around my desktop or watch movies. So technically i am saying. Using 2 seperate windows screens. Is it possible? If so, how? Also, if i use two seperate sceens, then how would i be able to switch between them? And if i jus scroll my mouse to the other screen just like that, then wouldn't that affect my gameplay? Since if i move my mouse it would just go to the other screen if moved too far. So thats it. Thanks for your time. =)

    1. Yes you can use the converter for one monitor and just the normal DVI cable for the other one. 2. Yes. -Connect both monitors to the vidoe card. -Go to: Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings> And then: You should see two blue rectangles, labeled "1" and "2," with a dotted border surrounding the latter, indicating the second monitor is still not active. Move your mouse over the monitor 2 rectangle, and a Not Active tool tip should appear. Right-click and check the Attached option to activate the secondary monitor. Now set the resolution and color quality as desired and check the box labeled "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." Then drag the monitor 2 rectangle so that the positions of the two rectangles in the dialog box match the physical positions of the two monitors. You can place monitor 2 above, below, or on either side of monitor 1, and with the virtual and physical positions in agreement, you can drag the mouse from one monitor to the other, just as if the two monitors were one large screen. Before you quit the Display Properties dialog box, click the Identify button to display a large number on each monitor, which should agree with the number placement seen in the dialog box. 3. Yes, you can either have duplicate screens or two seperate. When you check marked the box labeled "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." You made them two seperate ones. You just scroll your mouse between them =) have fun!

The cable should work fine. Depending on your video card the dvi cabled monitor may need to be monitor 1. Your video card will also determine the separate screens issue.Go to control panel/display/settings to configure your monitor setup. Cloning is to have the same image on both screens. Extend desktop will give you a much larger desktop (both screens). Moving the mouse too far will move it to the other screen, useful for browsing but bad for some things (like games) it should also be pointed out that only games that can be played in a window (not full screen) will like this, most other games will not play this way although a few will let you adjust resolution to use both monitors for a much larger game screen (both at once) but all games will be determined on an individual basis. Good Luck.

The 8800 has two DVI connectors on it. If your lcd monitors have a DVI connector you can directly connect them. If the old monitor only has a VGA (15 pin) connector there are converters available. (see link below) I used google query: vga to dvi adapter. Think of your windows desktop as being twice as wide as you see with one monitor. Your 8800 driver cd should have the necessary software to configure two monitors. If not go back to the Nvidia website and get the latest driver(s) for it. You don't really switch between them. Usually you can set a hotkey or just roll the mouse left or right. You might want to adjust your mouse ballistics in the control panel to facilitate faster movement between screens. As far as gameplay I think you have to tinker with the video setup options in order to play the game in a window, rather than full-screen.

well i haven't got to play with dual monitors so i can't answer all your questions but yes the DVI cable will work you should probably use it on your new monitor for better quality anyway. there are many different ways to setup monitors like this so as for the having a game on one and desktop on other yes you can also set it up so it uses both though that tends to be used more for tri monitors and shooters. as for it effecting your gameplay i got no idea since i haven't gotten to play with that feature yet.

Sorry.. you can ofcourse set up dual monitor configuration but can not do two different tasks on two different monitors simultaneously as the input devices would be 1...
