HELP With An External Monitor on Old Dell Laptop?

Dell Laptop Monitor Help!?

• Hello everyone, I recently bought a new 21.5 inch monitor for my dell laptop. I was trying to install the monitor when I inadvertently changed my monitor settings. After my computer boots up there is only a black/blank screen. Everything else seems to work but I can't do much of anything else. I see the boot-up screens perfectly but after that I see nothing. My question is; is there a way to change that monitor settings before boot up? Please I need help, Thanks in advance for any assistance that anyone can provide.

  Just as you power the system up press F8 several times to enter safe mode...that will allow you to log on and make the changes to your screen resolution...when it boots up to your desktop..right-click on a blank area and select properties or personalize depending on your operating system and select a different resolution in Display to work with your monitor.
