What does vga output mean?

My HDTV has a VGA/HDMI output, and computer has DVI/VGA do i use a VGA-VGA cable or DVI-HDMI for a better view?

  • Currently i am using a VGA-VGA for 1920x1080 but i saw a DVI-HDMI cable and thought i would get better resolution or graphics from switching display cables....so what cable/conection should i use?

  • Answer:

How VGA works: The digital image data in your graphics card's memory is first converted to an analog signal through the card's RAMDAC (RAM Digital to Analog Converter), then the analog signal is sent over the VGA cable to the display, where it is reconverted back to digital for display on the screen. DVI / HDMI needs no such conversion. The image data stays digital all the way from the video card's memory to the display screen. Personally, I don't see the point of converting the image to analog then back to digital again, which is why I don't bother with VGA anymore. My computer is connected to my HDTV using a DVI-to-HDMI cable and it looks fantastic. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/armchairaviator/computer/IMG_0880c.jpg

Use the HDMI cable, it's easier to plug in anyways. There is no limit on VGA so as long as your video card supports it, it will output it's maximum resolution to your TV. DVI and VGA both do not output audio, so it doesn't matter what you plug into, it's all just preference. On the other hand if your computer had a HDMI output, then it would be best to plug that in, as HDMI carries both high resolution and audio all in 1 cable.

I think HDMI cable will do better!
