What is this black screen of death & how to get rid of it?

  • This home computer I have has recently had issues, and its only a few yrs old....One day it was making an odd noise from the hard drive so I shut it down and tried to restart it, but this black screen popped up and gave me like 4 choices on how to start my computer, -safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, something else, and starts windows regularly...every time you choose a way to start it , the screen reloads this black screen again....What do I do? It was making an odd noise that you assume was from the HD but was the HD the cause or something else? That black screen of death as you call it, is not that bad since it is giving you a chance to fix a problem with the OS, I suppose you have windows XP so you can: a) Ask a friend with puter knowledge to help you. b) Take it to a repair shop. c) Hit Safe mode with networking, follow the on screen instructions and DO a system restore. It will show you (hopefully) different dates on Bold numbers, pick a date BEFORE the puter failed and click ok. The puter should restore to a previous date and fix the problem. If that doesn't work then you will have to find the source of the problem that is preventing windows to start and maybe to reinstall the whole OS. I hope you made backups of your work. Before you try the above, have you tried to select the option at the end of that black screen? The one that says: Start Windows Normally? Sometimes you get the black screen but selecting that option will start windows normally and then you can do all the checking directly from the windows interface.
