How do I keep my monitor from going to sleep?

How can I keep my monitor from going to sleep?

  • I just got a new computer. It's a Windows Vista 64 bit if that makes a difference. I want to be able to leave my computer on and just walk away from it and come back to a screen saver. But, every 10 to 15 minutes the monitor says it's going to sleep. Is there any way that I can keep the monitor on at all times? Please help.

  • Answer:

START > Control Panel (Classic View) > Power Options In the side bar you should see something that says "Change when the computer sleeps." Click on this and adjust accordingly.

Are you sure it is your OS that is making it go into sleep mode? Most physical monitors themselves have their own built-in "hardware" sleep mode, to go along with getting that EPA seal of approval. If it is the monitor itself going to sleep you may or may not be able to change that in the monitor's control panel. This varies widely by manufacturer, so you'll just have to play with the menus to find the setting. On some, there is no way to make it stop doing it, so be forewarned... One easy way to tell if it is your OS or your actual monitor is to boot your PC into the BIOS screen and walk away. If the monitor is in sleep mode a little while later, then it's your monitor and not Windows. I've had machines in BIOS screen mode for days and AFAIK no bios screen has a sleep mode for the video output. Best of luck and Happy New Year to you! :)
