What's the best way to convert VHS to DVD?
-
I have alot of old import videos, both VHS and Beta and would like to create DVDs from them. I know there is a way to hook up a computer to the VCR, but I don't know how. My tapes are starting to get worn and I would love to save the content on them. Could someone walk me through the process of converting the tapes to DVD?

Answer:
Let me try. (I really hope you know cables, et. al.) Option 1: GIO - Give it out :) You could give all of it to a business service that performs these transfers for a nominal fee. Option 2: DIY - Mess it up yourself, oops, Do it yourself. You will need: 1. Players for all the types of media you own -- or atleast the ones you intend converting 2. A digital video converter hardware plug in for your PC; e.g. Pinnacle Dazzle DVC 80, which I have owned for almost 6 yrs. 3. A software capable of capturing video. I use, and prefer, Screenblast Movie Studio 3.0. You could also search for "AVS DVD Player" and download the software from there. I have it installed but I haven't tried it as yet. 4. RCA cables for Audio + Video input / ouput. Depending on the player even an RCA stereo to RCA cable may also be required. (BestBuy, CircuitCity has staff who'd be more than happy to help you figure this out.) You will need to connect your player to your PC using a hardware device similar to the DVC-80 I mentioned above. Since it sounds like you have different types of media, you may want to aim at completing just one type first, so you don't have to keep changing the cable work. (nothing frustrates me more than that... !!!) Next, fire up your video capturing software and start capturing. What I typically do is start the software and then press "play" on the player. Then I use "stop" and "rec" as required, because I may not be interested in capturing every boring second from my video tape. I wish you all the best with your endeavor.

My mom just bought a d.v.d and v.c.r. combo that lets her record the the v.h.s. tape onto the d.v.d. She got it at Best Buy. This is what she bought. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8294865&st=vhs/dvd+combo&lp=7&type=product&cp=1&id=1172880156163 It works great. She has a bunch of old movies, too, and this has helped her keep them for the years to come.
