Why does my computer monitor keep saying "no signal"?

Monitor saying "no signal input." How do I shut down the computer without a monitor?

  • I just recently bought an alienware computer. Sometimes when i turn the computer on, the monitor says "no signal input." Restarting my computer usually does the trick, however I dont like having to hold the power button in or flipping the power switch. I have it hooked up to a 2 port switch, but plugging the monitor directly into the computer still causes this problem sometimes. I use my monitor for my xbox and ive never had a problem with it saying "no signal input" for that. I've tried contacting alienware but all they seem to come up with is try doing system restore, which has done nothing. I'm not too concerned with this problem (although if you have a solution id greatly appreciate it) I'm more concerned with having to restart my computer by hitting the power button or flipping the power switch. Is there another way to shut down the computer without it causing any harm to it?

  • Answer:

Since you sound like you are computer savvy, here is the quick answer. Put a shortcut on your desktop to do a forced shut down. From there you can go into the propertees of the icon and make a shortcut key for it (something you wont normally use like home + ctrl key). Instructions for making the forced shutdown key are in the link.

If your computer runs Xp or higher you can safely shut it down by hitting the power button once. This tells the computer to shut down normally as if you had hit shut down on the start menu. Another way to just restart it is to hit "control" "alt and "delete" all at the same time twice in a row and it will restart your pc.

On some computers, a quick press of the power button (not holding it) will set the computer to shut down. It may be that you need to set it to so this. I always use the power button instead of clicking 'Shut Down' as I find it easier. Or, if you have Windows Vista, you can press Ctrl+Alt+Del, then the Tab button (the 2 arrows above caps lock) 3 times, then space bar.

when your monitor is workin press Alt+Ctrl & Del and then look where the shut down button is and remember that because you could use the arrow keys to get to the shut down button and then press Enter. if you get me

Just hold the power button in. It's not a big deal and unless you sit there and do it over and over constantly, without stopping, it won't hurt anything.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del at the same time. Do it again. Twice, should do the trick.

Nope, there's no other way!
