Can I/How to hook up my laptop to a desktop monitor?

  • Ok this is is a question with many parts any help is appreciated: 1.) Can I hook up my laptop to any desktop monitor or do I need to buy a special kind of monitor (or some adapter) to do that? How would I find out if my specific laptop and monitor are compatible with each other? Do I just check to see if they have wires and ports that fit together? 2.) If they are compatible,...how do I do it? 3.) My laptop is pretty new so it can play videos in 720p and I think even 1080p, and the reason I want to use this monitor because I think the videos would look great on it's widescreen but is it possible the monitor won't be able to handle these HD video formats? or is that strictly the CPU's job? If it helps here are the equipment in question: Monitor: Acer X223w Laptop: Lenovo Ideapad Z570 Thanks for any help!

    your monitor is only 720p but that doesn't mean you cant view 1080p movies on it. but you will only get 720p quality out of it. For connecting laptop to monitor, Just simply connect your monitor vga cable to your laptop vga output port.

You can hookup your monitor with a vga cable. You won't need an adapter. Hooking them up is simple. The type of cable needed is the only thing you would need to know when checking to see if a monitor would work with your laptop. But you can always find an adapter. As for your specific laptop, your can output the video via a vga or hdmi cable. However, your monitor does not have an HDMI input. When it comes to video quality, a monitor will be able to display anything pretty much. It does not matter if the video is a higher quality than the monitor supports. The monitor will just display at its own highest quality unless the video quality is actually lower than what the monitor can handle.

I believe the Ideapad z570 has a vga output (15 pin). Use a standard monitor cable to connect from the laptop to the monitor. Then On the laptop right click on the desktop, assuming your using Windows 7, and choose "Screen Resolution." From there you can set the resolution of the Acer monitor and assign it to duplicate the display or extend the desktop. In response to Resolution: The monitor actually supports 1680x1050 so it would utilize HD very well. However if you were to go that route i would suggest going HDMI (from the laptop) to DVI (to the monitor) as this is a digital signal instead of an analog signal.

Your PC comes with a cable with two blue ends on it. This is called the VGA cable... Disconnect whatever the other end of the VGA cable is on and attach it to your laptop... If you want to connect it to your television monitor, You are going to have to have a monitor that has the PC label/VGA input. So now it would look like Laptop -------------------- Attached to VGA cable--------------Attached to monitor

It depends on what port your laptop has. If it has a VGA port, then you just plug it in there. If it doesn't have a VGA port, then you need something like a USB to VGA cable with the software drivers for it. Then you need to tell you laptop to output to the screen. On most Lenovo laptops, this is done by pressing the Fn key and F7. It will either bring you up a menu to select from or it will do the 3 cycle system (Laptop screen, Laptop screen and Monitor or Monitor only). You may need to change your desktop display settings for the screen to a higher resolution to make the most out what the monitor can display.
