How much less energy does a computer use on sleep?

Energy use of old computer monitors?

  • I have a Gateway 2000 Vivitron 17 computer monitor purchased in 1995. It still works but I wonder if the energy use is much higher than the updated flat screen monitors. I was thinking of purchasing a 22" flat screen monitor for my computer to replace this one.

  • Answer:

I've seen older CRT computer monitors that used anywhere from 85watts to 175watts and I once had a 22" Sony that sucked up 210watts, though 85-90watts for smaller monitors is more typical My last monitor, an expensive IBM with a florescent back-light that drew 45watts when on and 11watts on standby. The monitor I'm using now, a two month old ASUS VE248Q draws 17watts on and 0.7 on standby. It is of course an LCD flat-screen that has LED back-lighting. Typically an LED back-lit LCD monitor will draw ~8% (+/-3%) as much power as a CRT

A CRT monitor (tube) uses much more electricity than a LCD.

The old CRT displays use a lot more power. Your new LCD display won't only use less power but it'll be a lot nicer to use and easier to look at.
