How to get image from laptop to external monitor?

How do I get my complete desktop to appear on my alternate monitor?

  • Hi, asked this last night, hoping to get more response during the day. I've got an LCD TV that I've hooked up to my computer so I can use it as a larger/secondary monitor. Unfortunately all I have is my wallpaper showing up and if I want anything else to appear on the secondary side I have to drag it over. At work, when we set up our projector it automatically shows the desktop with icons and any other programs I'm running in real time, no dragging stuff over. Does anyone know what I've done wrong or how I can get it to display the exact same image as my computer (laptop's) screen? Thanks

  • Answer:

When you have a dual output video card you generally have options to run in "clone" (duplicate output on all displays) or "second display" (extend desktop to use that display) modes. It sounds like you want to run in clone mode so that both displays are showing the same content. If you go into your video driver settings you should be able to find an option to control how the second display is being used. As for your work setup with an overhead projector, this is a little different. What happens there (typically) is that the line from the PC to the monitor is run first through the projector and a line from the projector then goes to the monitor (basically it sits in between the PC and the monitor).

This depends mainly on your video card.. Just open the graphics options and play with it I can't be specified because options vary from one card to another
