How to connect my PC to a PC screen and a TV?

  • I have connected my PC screen to my computer using a VGA cable. And now, I want to also connect a TV using a HDMI cable. I called the manufacturer of my PC, and he said it was possible, but he could not help me modifying or configuring all the crap. My TV have 3 HDMI ports, and my PC have 2. I would guess that the HDMI ports on my TV wouldnt matter, but which one of the ports on my PC is right? One of the ports are just next to the VGA cable, and the other is almost on the top along with some USB ports. I have tried a few connections, but nothing so far seems to give any life to my TV. Still says No Signal. When I right click on the desktop and open the resolution setups, it says its just 1 monitor. I have tried Win+P, but nothing there seems to affect anything either. XFX Radeon HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 is the relevant card I guess, that Im using. Any tips?

You would connect the HDMI port next to the VGA port to the HDMI port on the TV. This would be the one right on the back of the computer, on the video card. The other one you're talking about may be a FireWire or eSATA port or onboard HDMI which would not work since the active video card is the Radeon 6970. You then go to AMD Vision Engine Control Center (right-click the desktop) and click on Desktop Management. Once there, you should see an icon for your PC monitor and the TV. If you want to duplicate the screen you see on your PC monitor, click on the TV icon on the bottom and select Duplicate. If you want to Extend, click on Extend. If you want to switch from monitor to TV, then select Replace. I would also recommend making a keyboard Hotkey profile so that you can easily switch from PC to TV with a few keystrokes. Choose something like CTRL + SHIFT + F1 for PC, and CTRL + SHIFT + F2 for the TV. That way, you won't have to open up AMD's display center to change it back every time you want to switch. EDIT: Note that whatever screen resolution you have your monitor set to, it will try to duplicate that resolution on your TV. If that resolution is not the TV's native resolution, the picture will look messed up. Find out what the native resolution is (typically for 1080p screens, it would be 1920x1080, or 1280x720, or 1366x768 for example). You would have to change the resolution in AMD Engine Control Center to match the TV's to get the best picture quality. And if you switch back, you'll have to change the resolution that best works for your PC monitor. I suggest making the changes to the profile when you set up the keyboard Hotkey to have those different resolutions when switching back and forth so that you don't need to manually change them every time. EDIT: You might have to restart your PC. After you restart it, you may also have to force the computer to check for additional monitors (such as the TV). Do this by: Go to AMD Engine Vision Control Center. Click on Common Display Tasks. Click on Detect Displays. There's a green button off to the right hand side that says Identify All. Click on it. It should show up now. EDIT: Also, make sure the TV is on and it's input is set to the HDMI port that you plugged the cable into. EDIT: Do you have the drivers for the 6970 installed? If not, go to website and download and install. http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.48&contentType=GPU+Download+Detail EDIT: You can also switch displays using Windows' built-in display properties panel. On the screenshot you posted, if you click on the Detect button, it should try and detect any additional displays you have connected. This is what my screen looks like: http://s11.postimage.org/5i5x9p88j/screenshot.jpg Note that there are two displays connected. One is the monitor and the other is the TV. Here is a screenshot of AMD Catalyst Control (you may have older version and they changed the name from Catalyst Control Center to Vision Engine Control Center...). http://s12.postimage.org/hg1z73oql/screenshot2.jpg EDIT: Well, the problem is that the computer isn't detecting the new display. So it could mean a bad cable or something else. Check if you have another HDMI cable and plug it in and see if that doesn't fix the problem. You're welcome. Sometimes, it's easy to miss something and mess the whole process up. Technology is a bit finicky in that regard. If you don't have everything set up exactly as it's supposed to, it doesn't work and finding the problem means running through a long list of things that you may or may not have done. I'm glad I could help. Have fun using your TV as a monitor!
