What's wrong with my DVI cable/monitor? (low resolution)?
-
Recently my computer booted up at 1024x768 when I normally run something higher. I tried reinstalling graphics drivers - no dice. I also ordered a new graphics card (I was convinced that was the problem), which I now see was unnecessary because when I plugged my wife's monitor into my computer, I booted up at max res. I tried swapping DVI cables between her monitor and mine, and it made no difference. My computer still boots at low res, and I can't set it any higher than 1024x768. Also, for several months my monitor hasn't turned on at all during startup - it only detects a signal when Windows loads. I can't boot in safe mode for example because I can't see anything. From what I can tell, the only faulty component left is my monitor. Is it the problem? If so, is it possible to fix myself, or am I stuck with getting a new screen? Also, can I get a DVI to VGA adapter and fix the problem? My monitor also has a VGA outlet. Or could my low res still be caused by the graphics card/cable somehow? Thanks in advance.

Answer:
Your wifes monitor works at high resolution Your monitor won't do higer resolution than 1024x768. Even thought the graphics drivers make the higher resolution your monitor plug n play tell the graphics card what resolutions your monitor is capable of. There are monitor information files with the monitors website or a disk that came with the monitor that helps set up the resolution. Your graphics card does not have a VGA out which it usually does have you checked. DVI is a digital signal and VGA is an analog signal and a DVI to VGA adapter will not work. Is the monitor still under warranty? Monitor prices are low now and I see on Techbargains.com that LED LCD 22-24' monitors are $120-$150 Samsung Viewsonic or ASUS
