How do you fix a burned out monitor?

Capacitors in a monitor?

  • Hi I'm trying to fix my broken monitor right now. I opened it up and found that 3 of the 5 capacitors in the monitor were blow out. I was able to get 5 new capacitors but the old ones are 820 microF and the new ones are 1000 microF. I was wondering if i should just replace the burned out capacitors or replace all the capacitors in the circuit. Any help would be great. Thanks!

  • Answer:

1000 should work fine, unless it's a timing circuit. Start by just replacing the blown ones, and any that don't seem blow, but are domed-shaped on their tops, as those are bad also, even if they aren't "popped" completely. However, the 1000's need to be the same voltage rating, or higher! Don't install ones that are lower voltage, as they could explode.

Just replace the blown out capacitors but only replace them with the correct ones using the wrong ones could create even further problems, if you want to be save replace them all to be sure.

yes it would be easy

Replacing capacitors with the wrong ones could very well do more damage. Electronics engineers pick components based on the design of the circuit, which ultimately boils down to math. If you're going to go through the trouble of replacing the capacitors, replace them with identical components or you do yourself no favors.
