Should I use a DVI male to VGA female converter or not?
-
I am using a DVI dual link male to VGA female converter on my graphics card which connects to the VGA port of my monitor, via a VGA to VGA cable(kind of obvious). My monitor also has a DVI-D dual link input. My question is 1) what difference will there be, should I remove the converter and use a DVI-D dual link to DVI-D dual link cable from my graphics card to my monitor? Will it be significant?. 2) I am using a Samsung SyncMaster B2230, running it at 1920*1080 at 60Hz(doesn't go any higher than that). According to what I understand from wikipedia, my monitor should go upto 85Hz at the same resolution if I get rid of the converter and connect directly with a DVI-D dual link to DVI-D dual link cable. Am I correct? Also, 3)What is the difference between the NICKEL PLATED cable and the GOLD PLATED cable? Which company's cable should I buy? And what is its current price as of November 20th 2011 in different countries for various lengths.By the way, I know the definition of VGA and DVI i.e., I am using a converter, the digital signals from my graphics card are converted to analog and I am getting analog signals on my monitor since I have connected the VGA cable to the VGA port of my monitor.Thank you for your patience and your answers. I am willing to further explain the question in detail if need be, so please DO ask.

DVI-D at high resolutions will always be superior to VGA. VGA was intended for analog monitors (namely CRTs, those big ones we used to use). Your video card and monitor will have to support the 85Hz refresh rate. The high refresh rate will be less tiring for your eyes. If you are a gamer, this could also be significant when playing games. Gold plated is better as gold conducts electricity better. Hit up Amazon, the expensive "monster" cable is no better than any cheaper brands. I am not going to do this research for you, but a simple search in amazon will give you all the results you should need. There is zero reason to use VGA if your video card and monitor support DVI or HDMI.

1. Yes, there will be quite a difference. 2. No, 1920x1080 is supported only at 60Hz 3. Buy the cheapest one. It doesn't make a difference in image quality since the DVI signal is digital.
