Is it possible for my computer to have 2 monitors?

Can my computer have 2 monitors at once?

  • I'm looking at buying a computer- its in this link. http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-Elite-HPE-470f-Desktop/dp/B003ZX87MW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1296516072&sr=8-1 I need two know if it can have to monitors at once. It said it had dual link DVI, does that mean it can have 2? If that's not what dual link DVI means, but the computer can still have 2 monitors, please tell me what feature affects that. Also, if it can't, what specifications does a computer need to have 2 and what accessories can i buy to allow it to have 2 monitors

  • Answer:

Dual-link DVI does NOT mean it can drive two monitors. Dual-link DVI supports ONE monitor ONLY, up to 2560x1600 resolution. Single-link DVI goes up to 1920x1200 resolution. The ATI HD5770 video card in that HP you linked to can actually support THREE monitors simultaneously-- One on VGA, one on dual-link DVI, and one on DisplayPort. (The third monitor MUST be connected to DisplayPort if you want to run triple-monitors).

You can have as many monitors as you have room for graphic cards

You can run multiple monitors with identical content using a VGA splitter. Otherwise, there are many dual, triple and quad-head graphics cards in PCIx, AGM and PCI formats. Some (dual-link ?) have one connector then you need a splitter cable. So they can fit 2 connectors hence 4 monitors on a standard-height PCI card.
