Computer monitor making weird noise/smell, etc...?
-
I have a viewsonic LCD flat screen monitor of some sort and last night out of nowhere, the screen became very dim for a few seconds and then went completely black. There was a faint but weird toxic burning smell and now my monitor makes a squealing noise, is very dim, and only works for a minute before going completely black. My monitor is only about 3 years old, at most. I'm not sure what the problem is, I assume something burned out? Is this an easy fix? if so, where can I get it fixed and what do you estimate the cost to be? or should I buy a new monitor?

Answer:
I'd keep it turned off but it sounds to me like one or more capacitors have popped.

Sounds bad. They generally cannot be fixed. Stop using it and get a new one. Fortunately they are a lot better and a lot less expensive than three years ago.

Something burned out, It's probably best to just get a new one.
Make sure your Video cables are still plugged in securely to both your video card on the PC and the monitor itself. Loose connections can do those weird things too! 3 years is a typical burnout age for a LCD monitor based on technology of that year. Do not repair it, cheaper to buy new and get a new warranty all over again. ** After checking cables, if no immediate improvement, power off, disconnect and do NOT use it again. If it fry's, the result is unknown and it could fry your video card in your computer or your computer too. Easy to happen if the wrong wires melt together inside. This may not be the case so not trying to create silly fears - just be wise in how electrical signals work and take precautions is all.
