How to connect macbook to external monitor?

How can I connect my Macbook pro to my new monitor?

  • I have a 2011 Macbook pro with Lion installed and I recently (yesterday) purchased an HP monitor. Unfortunately, it only supports DVI and VGA, not HDMI, which is the kind of cable/converter I already have. I've been told Lion is having problems with DVI converters working, so I'm thinking I'll just get a DVI to HDMI cable, inserting the HDMI side into the converter I already have and connecting the DVI side to the monitor. Will the converter accept this? Am I fighting a losing battle trying to connect this thing? I miss my PC.

Is it a fully digital DVI connection on the monitor? If so get a mini DVI to DVI adapter and away you go. Otherwise try the mini DVI to VGA connector. If it is a cheap poorly configured/non-standard PC type monitor then you will need to figure out just which connections are doing what. A model number for the monitor would have been helpful.
