Answer:
From your Desktop Properties or Control Panel you can access your Power Options. There you can put the monitor to sleep after 'x' minutes. Change your screensave to "off / none". Now your monitor will go into standby, the screensaver will not run and you need to also ensure your power settings are not set to shut down the hard drives too or put the computer to sleep. Else your download will stop and/or fail, later. Do not suggest unplugging however. Powered Off or Standby is the same thing minus a tiny amber LED that consume next to nothing in power at all. But plugging and unplugging creates unnecessary amp draw on the ckt and has been known to fry equipment. This has happened once to me and once to a customer right in front of me. So, leave it plugged in and change your software settings instead.

If possible have a separate switch for the plug connected to Monitor. Then you can switch off there. If this is not possible, then you can switch off the monitor using the on/off present on the monitor.
I would turn it off with the power button. Unplugging it is okay, but is a but of work to get it back in, depending on where you have it plugged in. Removing the cord altogether, is, if anything, counterproductive. The power button is your best option here.

Turning off from power button would be enough.
