How can I permanently set my screen resolution?

How can I set my screen resolution to 1280x1050 for a widescreen monitor?

  • The highest setting on the computer is 1024x768, and I don't know how to get it to a widescreen setting. I've also updated/downloaded the right driver for the monitor, but I don't know how to make the resolution work. (I'm trying to get it not to look like the screen is all stretched to accomodate the wide screen.)

    First, install monitor driver, since that resolution is not supported directly by "Default monitor" driver ... Than, right click on desktop, click on tab Advanced and change Your resolution...

1280 by 1050 is not a standard video resolution. Check what it is that you really want to do. 19" widescreens are generally 1440 by 1050. You do not need a driver for the monitor. What you may need to do is update the driver for the video card. Go to the web site for the system manufacturer and get the latest video driver for your system and install that.

Did your widescreen monitor come with a CD at all? It could be that you need to install the driver for that monitor. If you don't have a CD for it, visit the monitor's manufacturer website and see if they have one to download. Generally though your video card needs to support the monitor. Is your video card fairly new or old? Does it use VGA or DVI connector to your video card and monitor? First see if there's a specific driver for your monitor and if that helps. If not, you might need a different video card. Lastly, check your monitor carefully as sometimes they have a button that can automatically adjust your screen content to fit the monitor appropriately. Read the documentation that came with the monitor. I hope this helps.
