What can I use an old computer for?

What can I use my old computer monitor for? (I'm keeping it- don't say recycle please)?

  • I have a big old 17 inch Sony trinitron monitor that was $500 new and is still in perfect condition. Its 5-7 years old, and not hooked up to a computer anymore. Can I hook it up to my laptop somehow so I can watch dvd's on the big screen or hook it up to a dvd player easily. I know tv is supposed to be tricky. Hopefully one of you geniuses out there has great idea! Thanks, Chris

    if you have another desktop computer ,you can get a cheap video card(like $40) and hook up both monitors the computer, so that you have duel screens. it really give you alot more space(i'd know i use two monitors myself)

Get a TV tuner and hook it up to watch TV programs. As you have mentioned it can be used with laptop. I saw gadget , DVD/VCD/MP3 player which looks like a laptop in shape. It can be connected to watch DVD etc. Get a surveillance camera, watch your main enterence of your house or kids room or ... You might need an interface gadget to connect.

Hi. My laptop has a monitor port in the back of it where I could plug in an additional monitor if I want to. You should be able to do the same, but it may depend on your laptop. Check out my blog at www.garyfarnam.org

As long as your laptop has a good enough graphics card you can hook it up to your laptop and then go into your control panal and go to Apperance and Themes and then Display and then at the top you will see tabs and you will click on the Settings tab and then you mess around with that depending on your computer and then you can have basically two screens and your single mouse can roll across both of them. I did it and I love it. (Oh and you have to do all the setting up on the laptop.) If your laptop is really good and has an excellent graphics card with TV capabilities then yes you can somehow get the old monitor to play TV and DVD's but it is tricky and I honestly doubt that your laptop has that capability because it is just really advanced and hardly any laptops have them.
