What is wrong with my HDTV?

How to "Fix" HDTV gaming lag.?

  • I just purchased a 52" SONY BRAVIA LCD HDTV 120hz. Model KDL52V5100. I had been holding out for a few years and finally decided to buy it. I got it all set up and hooked up my xbox 360. At first I didn't notice anything was wrong. After gaming on it for two days I started to notice that it seemed that every game I played seemed to be lagging even when I wasn't online. I started doing some research and realized that this is a known issue with HDTV. Surprisingly none of my friends with HDTV even knew about it. I was starting to worry that I purchased a bad tv for gaming. I tried everything I could. I turned off the motion flow and put my tv in game mode, but nothing seemed to work. I thought all was lost until I really thought about the issue. The problem with HDTV are the refresh rate. It doesn't matter if you buy a 240hz tv it WILL lag. Games have to be played at 60hz however "Game mode" does not properly address the issue. Game mode runs at 60hz but the hdtv processor is still polishing the image before you see it. Essentially you see 1 frame that is actually happening for every three the hdtv shows you(that varies depending on hz your tv is running). What happens is the source in my case an xbox360 was processing the image and sending it to my tv. Then my tv processor had to process the image. This is what causes the lag. The fix is simply purchasing a VGA cable($30 at gamestop). This is the same cable that can hook your system up to a pc monitor. Most HDTVs have this port on them now. Once you hook up the cable you go onto your xbox and select your HDTVs native display mode(In my case it was 1920x1080). With normal component cables I had to select 480p, 720p, 1080p etc.. and then my HDTV took care of the rest causing lag. With VGA cables the XBOX takes care of all the resolution computation and the HDTV accepts the native screen resolution with no lag!(The cable unlocks a ton of specific screen resolutions, so for instance I no longer pick 1080p in the system settings I selected 1920x1080 my tv's native resolution.) I just did this yesterday and am amazed with the difference. I hope this helps anyone who had the scare/hastle that I did.

  • Answer:

I'm sorry but you don't know what you are talking about. While your TV may have problems with gaming many do fine using HDMI and DVI cables. While VGA cables are a good idea they are most certainly not necessary to game well on most TVs. More then likely you just don't know what you're doing, i wouldn't be surprised if you didn't turn off certain options or bought cheap/long cables which caused lag in the signal.
