Why does my computer monitor unexpectedly shut off?

• I bought a new computer a few weeks ago. It is a Dell. Just the other day when I got home from work, the monitor was shut off. The harddrive light was still on and running. I turned the monitor button on and it stated "entering power save mode" and shut right back off again. The harddrive is not hot at all, so it wouldn't be overheating. I know my old computer would do this once in a while, but it was 7 years old and there was a lot of other things wrong with it. Could it be an old surge protector? What is causing this and how can I fix it? I'm not talking about stand by mode, it will literally shut off and not function. How do I restart the computer (make the monitor go back on) without pulling the plugs or shutting the surge protector off?
