How to choose the most suitable LCD TV?

Help me choose the highest quality video connection from MacBook to LCD TV.?

  • We have a MacBook (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB DDR2 RAM) with a mini-DVI out. I will be hanging a 32" LCD TV on the wall in my daughters room at desk level so she can push a desk up to it and the TV can be used as a computer monitor as well. Which would be the highest quality video connection... Mini-DVI to a DVI/HDMI cable (2 converts) or mini-DVI to VGA (1 convert)? Every time a video signal is converted, it loses quality so my dilemma is should I convert a digital signal twice (the HDMI option) or convert digital to analog once (VGA option)? I'm not sure if I could use the TV's speakers for audio if I use HDMI for video (separate feeds). I really hope someone reads this that understands the question... Sorry if it makes your head spin. Any monitor gurus please advise. Thanx!

  • Answer:

MiniDVI-to-DVI and DVI-to-HDMI has NO signal conversion. That's because the video signal transmitted by miniDVI, DVI and HDMI are the same digital TMDS video signal. The signal stays digital from your Macbook all the way to the TV. That is your best option. Any time you use VGA, there are two signal conversions-- Digital to analog via the video card's RAMDAC, then analog back to digital at the display. You will need a separate audio cable. The miniDVI port on your Macbook does not transmit audio. You will need a stereo-mini-to-stereo-RCA cable to connect the headphone jack on the Macbook to the red-and-white stereo RCA audio inputs on your TV.
