Cannot connect laptop to external monitor?

Laptop will not connect to external monitor after installing windows 7?

  • I installed windows 7 from windows vista on my compaq presario cq50 with a broken monitor. I used another computer to help guide me since the laptop monitor was broken. After installing windows 7, I pressed fn+f4 so the laptop would connect to the external monitor. The laptop however, is not connecting to the external monitor! Whenever I press fn+f4, my broken laptop screen shows a change in color but that is it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Answer:

Since most laptop displays have multiple display features, you may have to hit the alt+f4 button more than once to get it to show up. Hold down alt, push f4, then push f4 again. See if that corrects the issue. If not, then it's definitely a driver issue with your video card (which may not even be supported in Windows 7) which means your laptop is using a Windows 7 generic driver. You'll have to have a professional look at it from that point.
