Problem with my blu ray movie?

I'm having a problem displaying an original Blu ray on my ps3?

  • Ok, this is the problem, I have a samsung p2370 with multiple input connectors (HDMI, V-Component, DVI, VGA and others.) I use my ps3 with video component cable because HDMI won't display the 1080p resolution for some reason, but I don't care about that really. My problem is that I bought the Extented collector's edition of Avatar, the original blu ray. Ok, as far as I know the movie, the disc is in 1080p resolution, right? So I change the display output of my ps3 to 1080p, and it works, I can see the operating system interface in 1080p and everything seems to work ok. Now, when I put in the disk and I start it I get to see everything upscaled like "stretched", just like when you put a 720p game disk while outputting 1080p on the ps3. When I change the system resolution back to 720p I get to see the movie perfect, it displays without stretching feels as though 720p it's the original real size of the movie. Now the question is this, Was I ripped off? or is there some sort of problem with my ps3?

  • Answer:

It's simple, you are not using HDMI or DVI. In order for Blu-Ray to be seen at full 1080P you need a complete digital connection with HDCP. Your monitor does not support HDMI, doesn't even have a connection for it, so the should use the DVI Connector to attache the PS3 to it for 1080P. When you go through the component connection you no longer have a pure digitial connection and you lose the HDCP so you lose 1080P.
