Connect Laptop to TV?

i have an HP G56 laptop, it only has a VGA port.. i want to connect it to my Panasonic plasma which only has the hdmi and s-video ports i heard that its impossible to connect the laptop to a tv with just using a VGA to hdmi cable( unless the vga outlet has an hdmi card built in..something like that xD) so how do i know if my computer has that built in? and if not.. what can i do? also, do the hdmi to VGA converting boxes work? i'm not buying either a new tv or laptop by the way :D..
