What's different about the new LED tv's vs. LCD tv's?

10 bit lcd vs 8bit led?

  • I am looking to buy either of the 2 following tvs on boxing day. They are both by Dynex. I need your opinion on which one is a better buy. 1. Dynex 32" 720p 60Hz LED HDTV (DX-32E250A12) - for $247.99 This is a LED tv and it has a 8bit video processor. You can check out more specs on the below link provided: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/dynex-dynex-32-720p-60hz-led-hdtv-dx-32e250a12-dx-32e250a12/10175286.aspx?path=5a6734b5dcc287d84d0c2488b8440471en02 2. Dynex 32" 720p 60Hz LCD HDTV (DX-32L200A12) - for $199.99 This is a LCD screen. But it has a 10 bit video processor. Link below will provide more details: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/dynex-dynex-32-720p-60hz-lcd-hdtv-dx-32l200a12-dx-32l200a12/10175664.aspx?path=2c21cd90fb06fdf9b5d0c58d68d05568en02 Now, what is confusing is that LED should provide a more stunning visual. However, it doesn't have the 10 bit processor to produce a wide array of colors. So, I am really confused. On the other hand, the LED one has a lower response time and higher contrast ratio (both are good things to have.) Taking everything in consideration, which do you believe is a better buy and why? Your answers will help me in making a right choice of buying a TV. It will be mainly used for gaming as i plan to hook up my PS3. Thanks a lot guys!!!

This question has been answered before, so I will just leave this link here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090428081833AAKKhD5 TLDR; The 8 bit processor can only produce 72% of the NTSC color range. The 10 bit processor can produce 102% of the range, and when playing back BluRay video it can display all of the colours that are used in the format. The 8bit processor cannot reproduce such colors and usually uses a technique called dithering to fool your eyes into seeing other colours. http://www.regza-asia.com/technology/technology_10bitprocessing.asp?cat=sc2

Popular misconception: an "LED" monitor at the moment is really just an LCD monitor with LED back-lights instead of the mostly CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) back-lights currently used on LCD monitors. "LED" monitors are the best to buy at the moment. One day true LED panels will come down in price, but not soon unfortunately.
