Can i connect my laptop to a tower as a monitor?

Getting a laptop and monitor, but I have some Questions.?

  • Ok, so I'm getting an Alienware M14 laptop but I want to get a monitor with it, so I'm getting a monitor and a keyboard, but how do you connect it to the laptop? Do I need to get a a tower if I connect it to the laptop? How do you make it so you can just move the mouse over to the monitor from the laptop? I'm also getting a Netgear Router for my room so I can connect it to that instead of putting it in the computer room across the house, but if the monitor is connected to the laptop do I need the router because I have one in my house already? Please answer all four of the questions, they're really important!

  • Answer:

Most laptops have a VGA port to use a monitor -if you don't want to use the screen that's built in to it. All laptops have built in WiFi transmitter/receiver so you don't have to do anything special to it when you try to use a router. Why do you need 2 routers in your home ?? If you/ your parents already have a router in your home, getting a second one is unnecessary. All you have to do is get the connection to the network that's already there using your WiFi. You don't have to get another keyboard for your laptop they have on built in to it. If you want to use a mouse instead of the standard touch pad, get a mouse with a USB connector (most already have this, just make sure it does). A lot of people use a mouse instead of the touch pad (myself included) If you buy a "tower" then you're buying another computer. Doesn't make much sense to buy another computer when you got a laptop.

The Alienware M14 has both a VGA and HDMI port on the left side that you can attach to an external monitor. You might need to get a cable. I would recommend you buy both cables. HDMI has a little better quality when you connect your laptop to a TV, but almost little discernible difference connected to an external monitor. The monitor has nothing to do with your router. Once you connect the VGA or HDMI cable to your laptop and then to your external monitor, your laptop should recognize this and automatically switch. If not, you simply go into your Control Panel and click on "Display" and you will see a "Detect" button, and that will find your external monitor and make it come alive. In short, you do not need a tower, you only need your laptop and either a VGA or HDMI cable, and your external monitor. Your router plugs into your laptop, unless you have a wireless connection from your router in your room to your laptop. Good Luck!

The keyboard will plug in via USB, the monitor will plug into the video port. You don't need to buy a tower. By default, the mouse should operate across both screens as one large desktop. You can adjust the monitor behaviour in your Control Panels. Check the specifications on the laptop so you know what video port(s) it offers so you can choose the correct cable for the monitor. The monitor doesn't have any impact on the router. If you can get a good signal in your room there is no need for another. If you can manage it, a wired connection to the router is better than wireless.
