Why won't the monitor display anything?

My computer monitor wont display anything.?

  • I'm not very tech smart, so I will just tell the whole story. Recently i had to move my mom's computer from her desk and for a few days i left the computer unplugged into any cables. When i put the computer back together and hooked everything back in, the monitor wouldn't display anything. I know the monitor isn't broken, because it works with other computers. The cable that connects the computer and monitor also works with other computers. Do you guys think this is a hardware problem and i need to take the computer in to be fixed, or am i missing something obvious? And yes, the computer is plugged in correctly. Also, i was gentle with the computer, and didn't yank or mishandle the computer as i dissembled it. And if it matters, the computer is about a decade old.

  • Answer:

You did good testing out the monitor and since it works with other computers what you have is a video card malfunction on the computer you moved. If the place you plug the monitor cord into is a video card (you well know because there are several possible slots on the back of your computer) take the panel off of the computer (while unplugged) and check to make sure the video card is properly seated in the slot. It is possible out came out far enough to loose its connection. If the cord to your monitor plugs in near where you plug in the speakers, mike, and there are two or three other connections right there. it is your onboard video and nothing you can do
