Cannot connect laptop to external monitor?

How do I connect an external monitor to a laptop with a dead screen?

About 3 weeks ago I had an accident with my laptop and now the screen is fried...I have a flat panel tv that I am able to hook it up as a PC monitor but I attempted to do that on my own without reading anything and I took it off of the Auto (laptop screen) function like most things suggest i do. Before i did that, the two first loading screens would appear on the external monitor but now i just get an out of range message on it... so what can i do to fix all of this and finally use the external monitor?!!
Answer:

Sounds like the current resolution setting on the laptop is not compatible with the TV. You can try starting the laptop in safe mode and changing the resolution, or hook it up to a smaller monitor and change the screen resolution that way.

Try to boot in safe mode and change the resolution once logged in. that might solve the problem...
