How can I use my TV as a computer monitor?
-
How can I use my TV as a computer monitor?, I'v got a basic knowledge for computers but this question still puzzles me, I know it is possible, my Uncle did it before, but I never stopped to ask him how.....So yeah, how can you use a TV as a computer monitor?, do I need extra components?,like extra or special cords, and could i purchase them in an ordinary tech shop like Dick Smith or Office works... (my TV is pretty new, so im pretty sure it should be capable for it). Anyways thanks

Answer:
As your TV is pretty new, it is likely that it has an HDMI and/or a VGA Video In port. You need to find out what port you have on your computer. It could be just a VGA or an HDMI port. If you have HDMI on both or VGA on both then all you need is a direct HDMI to HDMI or VGA to VGA cable and you're good to go. However, if your computer only has a VGA and your TV only has HDMI, then you need to convert the analog VGA signal to digital HDMI using a VGA to HDMI converter box that looks like any of these: http://www.google.com.ph/imgres?q=VGA+to+HDMI+Converter&hl=en&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1129&bih=637&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnsfd&tbnid=j9MAslttkZFEnM:&imgrefurl=http://www.digibuys.co.uk/VGA-to-HDMI-Converter-Adapter-p-290.html&docid=scAPUoykX9Fs5M&imgurl=http://www.digibuys.co.uk/images/P/vga-hdmi1.jpg&w=305&h=370&ei=l7UgT-jPFYjXiAKakKWpBw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=303&vpy=277&dur=8407&hovh=247&hovw=204&tx=126&ty=183&sig=110797966900498925237&page=2&tbnh=140&tbnw=132&start=18&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:18 Go to ebay or amazon and earch for "VGA to HDMI Converters" for the prices. I saw some for about $30. Some go as high as $60 which have 1080p support. To get sound to your TV as VGA ports don't carry audio, you will also need an audio cable with a headphone plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other. Here's a picture: http://www.cablesdirect.com/prodimages/CC399-25_LR.jpg Here's a sample of a VGA to HDMI converter: http://www.amazon.com/DekCell-VGA-Audio-HDMI-Converter/dp/B002N8O10W/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1326033189&sr=1-11 Don't make a mistake by getting just the VGA to HDMI cable without the converter box that looks like these: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRF3hMi9Y-LN1dUYXocjLk9Tm7bG7t2t_AL62ElAlTqI4szFVyj7A http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.qcables.com/assets/images/1.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.qcables.com/vgatohdmicable.html&h=250&w=250&sz=18&tbnid=HSlJJcsUMJ2uhM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=101&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dvga%2Bto%2Bhdmi%2Bcable%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=vga+to+hdmi+cable&docid=vCKFxLu8oewitM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=4K_dTsveDZGKmQWy4IWcBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CFAQ9QEwAw&dur=7366 They are not for computers.

there are several ways, depending on your tv and video card. 2 that i know of for sure, probably multiple others. the first is if your tv is an hdtv, and you have a fairly high end video card, you can buy a cable to hook it up. the second is if u have a older tv, or a lower end video card, you can buy an S-video cable.. heres some pictures of what these look like: http://www.macmall.com/p/product~dpno~587424~pdp.daidhgg;jsessionid=956E1BCC6270B163E4E28D8472D464CB?emOmni=null&source=MWBGOOGLEBASE ^^ this hooks from s-video on computer to composite video on tv. it uses your computer audio, or you can get this: http://www.amazon.com/Premium-S-Video-Composite-supports-Xbox-360/dp/B003LVBOJQ ^^ that is the same as before, but has audio jacks from headphone jack to tv or if your tv has s-video you can get s-video to s-video like this: http://www.staples.com/Staples-6-S-Video-Cable/product_837547?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Shopping-_-Technology%3ECables_&_Hubs-_-837547-18748 its pretty straight forward after that. go to control panel/adjust screen resolution, and select whether you want your second monitor (your tv) to be the same as your computer monitor, or whether you want it as an extension... select the resolution to make it readable, and there ya go... there ARE ways to do it in HD, but ive never done that, this always worked for me

The easiest method would be a vga cable. http://www.redplanettrading.com/images/D/vga-cable-800-01.jpg If your TV has a vga input then plug one end to the TV and the other to the computer (Both ends are the same). On the computer you simply have to hold the windows button and press the letter "P." The "P" stands for projector; you can toggle from "Computer only" to "Duplicate" to "Extend" to "Projector Only." You want "Projector Only." This should Project your computer to your TV.

t will depend on the video output on the computer...
