How can I connect my iMac to my HDTV?

Can I connect a laptop to an HDTV and a Monitor at the same time?

So, basically, I need to know if you can connect a laptop to an HDTV AND a Monitor at the SAME time. I connect my laptop via HDMI cable to my LCD HDTV. I sometimes connect my external monitor to my laptop sometimes. But I would like to connect to both at the same time, so I can view my laptop on my desktop monitor, while someone can be sitting and watching me on my HDTV. I tried connecting them both at the same time, but I guess there was a conflict with it, and it would only let me use my external monitor. Is there a way, to do both at the same time? If so, how should I go about it?
Answer:

you need to set up , multiple moniters in your video card settings, try to google about your video card to see if it supports dual (or multiple) monitors outputs. sorry if that is confusing
