Is this a good moniter?

Can I use a computer moniter, as a good substitute for a television?

  • I have direct TV, and I can get it for nearly free with a rebate check I have. I'm not sure, technologically, if there's a difference, except I think the moniter is not HD capable. My TV is old and heavy, and should be replaced. http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/p1__249924_Business_Supplies_10051_HOMEPAGE

  • Answer:

No, that Samsung monitor you linked to won't work with DirectTV. If you want a computer LCD Monitor that will work with DirectTV, the monitor needs to have two things: 1) HDCP-compliance and 2) a DVI or HDMI input. That Samsung you linked to has neither. You also need to make sure your DirectTV decoder box is a Digital HD box. Those have either a DVI or HDMI port in the back and can be directly connected to an LCD Monitor's DVI or HDMI. If your DirectTV decoder box isn't a digital HD box, you should call DirectTV and arrange an exchange with them (make sure to ask for one with either a DVI or HDMI port). If you got a digital HD DirectTV box and an HDCP-compliant monitor, all you need to do is connect the two, hook up a separate set of speakers to the DirectTV box (if the monitor doesn't have on-board speakers), and you are in business. BTW, just so you know, S-Video does NOT support High-Definition broadcast TV (720p and up). It can be done only over DVI/HDMI or analog YPbPr Component. Don't even bother with S-Video.

Although You'd probably pay a higher price for it, there are monitors that do have an S-Video input for external devices. Their main designs are for either multiple types of systems like Unix and etc., or for laptops that are occasionally connected at workplaces. For fast reference btw - a monitor is HD capable, and most of them display that way with software codings that are included in DVD players programs, so they are completely used to that display setting. Any time spent looking for custom monitor inputs will be well-spent in Your case. Good luck!.

If you are going to use this with a computer then i would say yes. But if you want to use it for a stand alone TV then nope. If you use it with your computer, you can put a capture card in your desktop then hookup your direct.tv or any source that has coaxial connection and watch TV on your computer.
