Is it possible to set up a VGA monitor to a DVI port that doesn't support an adapter.?

I have an ATI Radeon Sapphire 6790 with dual DVI ports. I also have two VGA monitors, but one of the ports does not support an DVI->VGA adapter. Is there a way possible to set up my second monitor without using an DVI->VGA adapter?

Answer:
Not possible to use a VGA only equipped monitor with your graphics card if it doesn't allow use of an adapter to convert analogue VGA to match the DVI digital interface on the Radeon HD card no. Sorry

You have to be able to connect the monitor to the computer. Since your monitor and computer's video ports are different, you can't connect a simple single type connector cable between the two. The connectors on the cable just won't fit. It's as simple as that. That means you have to have different connectors on a cable connection. If you absolutely don't want to use a separate adapter connected to a cable, they do have video cables with both VGA and DVI connectors on different ends. But they are more expensive. Another way you can do it is to have a converter box or a switch box. Basically, it's a separate box that you connect all the cables to it. You connect a VGA cable from the monitor to the box, and then a DVI cable from the computer to the box. A switch box is the same thing except it has multiple connectors so you can connect more than 1 computer or more than 1 monitor to the box, and it has a switch which you can change to whichever computer or monitor you want to make the connection. The expensive alternate is to either buy a new monitor with a DVI connector, or buy a new video card with a VGA port. But it's just easier getting an adapter for the cable.

I don't understand about the Radeon card not supporting an adapter on one of the DVI ports. One is single link, one is dual link. Sapphire web pages don't picture that. Their card has one DVI port only. Apparently the second DVI is on another undocumented model (as far as Sapphire goes). You can go to the HDMI port or the DisplayPort connection. There are VGA adapters for that: The HDMI: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=812010&Q=&is=REG&A=details for $30 The Displayport: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RPCZL4/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0025ZUF8K&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=000HXACWT5M8TKKEJ24T for $27 The Mini Displayport: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0031SEMBQ/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0025ZUF8K&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=000HXACWT5M8TKKEJ24T for $19 but this is a special size. Check your card. There might be different kinds of DVI-to-VGA adapters The M1-A(P&D) type of DVI appearing output sometimes supports analog modes. If your M1 input is digital only, a VGA adapter will not work. I guess that is why there are two ports for "DVI". You could try a DVI to VGA converter, not an adapter: http://www.ihseusa.com/products/videodvi-solutions/dvi-vga-converter.html price unknown but others I have seen are over $175!! Edit: On the #2 DVI port: "You have to enable the secondary port in the ATI/AMD Catalyst Control Center, it should be installed with the drivers for your card and listed in All Programs or if you right click your desktop,... both monitors need to be plugged in or it won't allow you too enable the secondary port in the CCC." http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/1021232-ati-raidon-hd-6790-dual.html "A single-link DVI cable can handle screen resolutions up to 1920X1200 pixels, but a dual-link cable is required for screen resolutions above that up to 2560x1600 pixels" "A DVI-D is a digital-only DVI port,..." "...a DVD-I port on a graphics card can carry both an analog VGA and a digital DVI signal..." http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/Video-Graphics-Cards.htm For an illustrated chart and pinouts for all DVI connectors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface
