How do I set a video as a picture?

How to get best picture quality from PC to TV set?

  • I would like to connect my windows media computer to my tv set. The only problem is that my tv set is rather old and only has the coaxial connection along with the RCA jacks(white, yellow, red). What is the best way to go about doing this to get the best picture possible? I'm looking at S-Video as an option.

  • Answer:

if you've only got the composite video connection, you're pretty much screwed for getting a decent picture. particularly if you're using NTSC... (s video and composite only look significantly different on PAL sets when things get really heavy, but as i understand it the s video standard was introduced because ntsc composite... well... it sucks.) rather than buying the media centre computer you probably should have got a new TV, because my old 21" one - soon to be replaced - doesn't even do proper multistandard support, but it has full composite, s video, and component inputs (thru a euroconnector). just a bog-standard mitsubishi from about 1993. that thing you have there almost certainly isnt widescreen either... is it?! to get the best picture possible... 1/ change the tv... go hd! with something thats hi res, with s video, component, and hdmi / full digital / vga inputs... or if you can't: 2/ use the best quality leads and connectors you can afford, and remember - never mix gold and tin 3/ if your media centre has a changable video card, buy a new video card with the highest rating possible for composite output quality (if there's even anywhere that rates such things) 4/ get a signal cleaner box to strip out macrovision and all those other nasties that will confuse the set's electronics and degrade the image on your screen.

If your TV has the S-Video input, it is the best possible for picture quality. If your computer does not have a S-Video output nor the RCA yellow output you can either buy a videocard that has them or you can buy something like http://www.nextag.com/vga-to-s-video/search-html you can name your price and go from there.

If your TV only has coax and RCA it won't matter. RCA would be the best. Just find a converter for your computer. THe "BEST" for PC to TV would be an HDTV set with DVI input :-) General quality of connection from lowest to highest: Coax (everything crammed into one) RCA is next lowest (white, and red audio, yellow video) S-Video (seperate white and red audio, one cable for video but that cable has seperate wire pairs for saturation etc) Component (White and red audio, Red blue and green video cables) DVI (white and red audio, big white digital connector - Digital Video Input)

s-video is slightly better than rca cables. You can get some "monster" cables that might help the signal too.
