Can we connect an AV input to an HDMI output?

How to connect a laptop with HDMI output to a LCD monitor with DVI input?

  • My laptop has a HDMI output, but my 24inch LCD only has a DVI input. I know there's cable that connects them, but I don't know which one to buy. I mean, there's something called male-to-male, male-to-female and etc and I am really confused.

  • Answer:

HDMI-to-DVI cable. IMO, unless you plan on long lengths of 20 ft or more, you would be fine with a $15 6-9 ft cable at monoprice or the 1 below. 0&1's. http://www.homeprofitsguide.com/?s=HDMI But hey, $25 for a quality 12 ft cable is not bad either. I wouldn't pay any more.

Look at the slots. Male means... well look to biology... that there are pins that are will be put into something. Whereas female slots have holes that receive the pins. You can easily get a HDMI to DVI adapter. I do not think you even have to worry about the male and female problematics, but look at your slots and you will see what you need. I bought mine new at a store equivalent to radioshack for approx. $15 and I live in a high cost country.
