Cannot connect laptop to external monitor?

Broken laptop screen cannot connect to external monitor. Fn f4 key doesn't work either?

  • Hi, I have a smashed laptop screen (i cant see any of the screen, just lines and smashed lines) but the laptop still works fine. If i switch it on, obviously I can't see anything so I decided to hook up an external monitor via HDMI to my laptop. I thought that because it is HDMI, it would auto configure and extend the display from laptop to monitor. This didnt happen however. I have tried fn f4 to use the monitor but that doesn't work. I'm not sure if the laptop is booting in safe mode or normal mode or whether it gets to a user prompt that requires my input [which I obviously can't do anything with because I can't see it]. What should be my next try? p.s. my next try will be to close laptop lid then boot up. model is hp pavillion dv6 1299ea thanks

  • Answer:

what I do with my laptop (hp pavilion g series) is hold down the windows button and press 'p'. That makes four options pop up side by side. You would want to hit the right arrow key three times to get to the 'projector' option and press enter.

Good luck with setting up a second monitor, i hope it works out for you. A more permanent solution would be simply to buy a new screen $59.99... Although a bit of elbow grease is required. http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-dv6-1299ea-SUBSTITUTE-REPLACEMENT/dp/B005MK8TU6 Here is a tutorial on youtube of disasembeling the DV6 series and replacing the screen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq6Fj9bi424 This is a simple really. You unscrew all the screws in back of case... Remove the keyboard (pops off) then remove "cover" the cover is just the top surface of the laptop that surround the keyboard. At this point you simply unscrew the hinges that hold the screen in place, unplug the connection to the motherboard (it simply snaps off and on like any plug) and set your new screen in place. Anyone that is good with their hands, not even necessarily technically inclined would be capable of this in an hours time or less. Again good luck with everything.

Try the VGA connector plus the Fn + F4 key instead of the HDMI cable to TV. Disconnect the VGA connector from a PC with a standard LCD monitor and plug it into the laptop, then Fn + F4 key. If you use HDMI, be sure you changed the TV's input mode to the HDMI port you will use.

The laptop screen has to come on in order to disable the laptops monitor .

mmmm not that hard.... buy a new one!!

I had the same exact problem, smashed screen, connected to my tv via HDMI, literally exactly what it going on with your case was even close to the same computer if you count just being an hp pavillion as close :p 1) Is the HDMI cable connected when you turn the computer on? 2) If so make sure that the monitor is on the right input channel Do this before you turn the computer on. Now turn the computer on, In my case the above steps only worked once the next time i had to do it like so.... 1) Ensure HDMI is connected and monitor is on correct input channel 2) turn pc on 3)Here is the tricky part, i had my computer password protected, what i had to do was wait for it to boot 4) enter my password (all the while not being able to see anything) Once i entered the password it logged me in and the HDMI was able to establish a connection, from then on out i didn't have to worry about it again PS Make sure your volume is on and turned up that way when it gets to the point you can login you can hear the noise its makes and also the noise it makes for once you have logged in PPS I dont remember if i had to do any random clicking to click my profile in order to login, if just entering your password doesn't work i suggest getting a computer with the same OS as yours pinpointing where they have to click in order to access their account before entering a password, then attempt it on yours. I know these aren't strait forward answers but its what i had to do and it did work. Also If all else fail continuously restart your computer in hope that the HDMI connection will "stick" Hope you get it working! I know its a basta**.
