How do I set up a dvi to vga adapter?

Can you use a mini-DVI to VGA adapter for a dual screen setup with Windows 7 in Boot Camp 3.1?

  • I have a MacBook 13" (November 2007 identifier 3,1). I want to connect it to my Toshiba HDTV using the mini-DVI port while running Windows 7 in Boot Camp 3.1. I already have a mini-DVI to DVI adapter that does not work under Windows XP and 7, but does work under Snow Leopard. That is what is supposed to happen. Now, I don't mind using a VGA cable to connect the MacBook to the HDTV since the TV won't accept audio from the Audio-In unless I use the VGA-In anyway. I read mixed testimonials online stating whether or not a mini-DVI to VGA adapter will work on a MacBook connected to an external monitor under Windows 7 via Boot Camp 3.1. Someone let me know if the mini-DVI to VGA adapter will work. I only want responses from people that know first-hand if it will work--not from people who heard it from a friend-who-has-a-roommate-that-knew-this… So respond only if you know if it will work or not and if you have a MacBook using Windows 7 under Boot Camp 3.1 using a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.

  • Answer:

Did you install the Windows drivers for the graphics chip? If you did not, (i.e. Windows says you are using the "standard VGA graphics adapter" under device manager), you will NOT be able to run dual displays, no matter what miniDVI adapter you got connected.
