My computer monitor doesnt work?
-
Bit vague I know. Sorry Anyway, when I turn my computer on, it takes about twenty minutes for the monitor to turn on. Well, it turns straight on but then turns itself of straight away until it decides it is ready, a very hit and miss affair. I have however figured out that it turns on and stays on fine until it is connected to my computer. Would this mean I have a fault somewhere? I thought it was the touchscreen power button on my monitor not working but the power is going through fine until the moment it is connected to the computer. Do I need a new monitor as I dont think the old one is broken. Its an old computer, is it better to just replace the whole thing? Ideas welcome and appreciated

Answer:
Many monitors appear to be working because they display the "no signal" message, the issue is that when you do introduce the signal the monitor then fails to start as it should so it could still be damaged, try it on another PC or laptop. If it displays an image then obviously the issue is with your PC. As it is taking 20 minutes to start I would suggest the monitor is fine, the issue is the hard drive on your computer. When the PC eventually starts then check to see how much free space you have on your computer, less than 10% and you may get issues. First thing to do is back up any important data, do it now or if the drive fails when you are testing it then it is lost and you will kick yourself for not doing the back up first. Once backed up, clear unecessary files and programs to create space, clear the Temp files, clear the system restore points (create a new one immediately just in case!) now you can test the HD. Click on my Computer icon, right click on the C: drive, select Properties, select Tools and run the "Check the Drive for errors" option. It will need to run on a restart so allow it to do that, watch to see if it finds errors, if so consider changing the drive. If it finds no errors then run a de-frag of the drive (you will also find this option in Tools list). You may find the issue is just a badly fragmented drive. It could be dodgy RAM modules, low power issues with the PSU as well as perhaps a dodgy monitor but I would hazard a guess at Hard Drive issues. If the drive does list errors, you may be able to correct them with the check disk option. Boot from a Windows CD, if XP then press R for Repair when prompted, choose the drive (usually 1) enter the password you normally use to log in to Windows (if you don't use one just press Enter) If Vista or W7, choose your language and keyboard, choose the Repair My Computer option, then choose the command prompt option for all versions you now type chkdsk C: /r and press Enter and allow it to run, this may take a few hours. once completed it may tell you it found and fixed errors which is good, or it may tell it found and could not fix errors in which case you ideally need to replace the drive. If it found and fixed errors but there are still Bad sectors listed in the summary then again, consider replacing the drive.

When you turn on a computer it goes through what is known as POST (Power On System Test) and if there are any problems with the computer you shall hear a set of beeps. This is because, as you say, your video display may not be working. If you hear no set of beeps then it is unfortunately your monitor otherwise if you tell us the order of the beeps and their lengths then we can give you more information! Good luck! Do you have another device you can test it with? Try the monitor on a second computer, or try your television with your computer. If the TV with the computer works it is a monitor problem, if your monitor works with another computer it is a computer problem.

The monitor goes off or you don't see a picture? There's a difference. If the monitor stays powered on but there isn't a picture, it's definitely a problem with the computer. If the monitor turns off, it might be in the computer, but more likely in the monitor. To be sure? Plug the monitor into another computer. If it works, it's a problem with the machine; if it doesn't, it's in the monitor.

Maybe you have a bad capacitor/condenser since it was a old monitor.Just replaced the old with the new one,if you know how to solder electronics components. if you dont know how to do it. Dont do it.Just send it to electrician to fully check the fault.
You need to check if all your cables are installed properly to your computer. If not then you should tighten them if not then your monitor is still broken.
