Why won't my new laptop turn on?

Why wont my laptop wont turn on?

  • Well, my laptop wont turn on, actually it does, i have an IBM thinkpad computer. When i turn it on, it shows an IBM screen then it just stays on that and does nothing else. Then i hear the computer running, then after a few minutes it just stops and freezes on the screen. any help?

  • Answer:

as it is an IBM Thinkpad then it is quite old, IBM has been out of production for quite some time (the brand name was sold to Lenovo) so it is possible it has just expired and it is time to get a new laptop. But before giving up on it try the following. Take the lower panels off to expose the RAM modules, remove and re-seat them. Do the same with the Hard Drive, just remove it and then re-seat it again. Do the same with the battery, remove it, but don't put it back in again, just connect via the mains plug and restart. Does it boot now? If so insert the battery (careful not to dislodge the power cable) and if it switches off the chances are the battery has ruptured and is shorting out, either use without it or buy a new one. IF the battery seems to be OK when you insert it then most likely it was a loose RAM module or dirty connection on one of the Hard Drive connecting pins. If you still get the same issue, remove the Hard Drive and boot, if it boots properly (into the BIOS, as it will find the HD is missing and give you an error message) then the drive is damaged. If still the same then switch off remove all RAM modules and start, if it beeps then that is good, if it does not then the board is damaged, definitely time to buy a new laptop. Put in one RAM module, boot, if it sticks then switch off try the same modul but in a different slot, if it sticks then try the other RAM Module and do the same. If all stick in all the slots then the issue is most likely the board rather than both modules are defective. If one slot seems to work or just one module then the logic is only one slot is functioning properly, or just the one module is. For a broken slot it could be dirty, but chances are it has failed, a new board is not cost effective. If the module and one works n both slots, the other does not work in either then simply replace the RAM module.

Your laptop is unable to get past the post screen, this usually indicates a serious fault either with the motherboard ram or hard drive. You will need to check it in to a workshop to find the fault HTH David

it has something to do with the ram i guess, or maybe the motherboard.
