Colors on laptop messed up after connecting external monitor?

I connected an HP monitor to my HP laptop today and the colors on my laptop screen appeared to change (everything got brighter, lighter). I don't know why this happened, but unplugging the monitor did not fix it and now the colors on everything look fine on the monitor itself, but not on the laptop screen. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? Please help.
