Why is my monitor not working with my hdmi to vga cable?

  • Actually it's a hdmi to dvi cable attached to a dvi to vga adaptor. I have a laptop with a hdmi output and a monitor with a vga input. I think it may have to do with switching digital to analog, but then why would they make a dvi to vga cable? If that is the case then do I need a converter of some sort?

    This won't work because DVI was meant as a bridge between analog and digital; that is to say that it has both at the same time. HDMI is digital only, and it gives out a signal only to the digital portion of the DVI cable. VGA is analog only, and it takes the analog signal of a DVI cable. So, there's no signal to transmit. You'll need a converter, check with other answers.

They make converters and adaptors and cables in every form because of the progression from one thing to another. It would help to have make and model of each to find the optimum connection. Likely you have an older TV with a newer laptop and yes, digital output from HDMI and analog input to VGA of the TV, but that may not be the best connection. Some PCs also have an analog out and there are various inputs to monitors. The pricing is wide and so is the quality.
