How To Draw Save Electricity?

Does a computer really draw a lot of electricity? Is it better to turn them off or leave them on to save $?

  • Answer:

i think its better to leave them on, as most modern computers have a sleep mode that is designed for just that purpose. besides if you constantly turn computers on and off, the initial power on makes other parts of the computer (ie. hard drive, RAM memory chips) work harder thus depleting their working life. if you're concerned about saving Energy, make sure your Operating System goes into "suspend mode." the amount of power your computer uses is very minimal.

It really depends. You can also tell your computer to save more power at the sacrifice of performance, or boost performance at the sacrifice of power. If you have Vista, go to Control Panels, then "Power Options" to see the options. But honestly, computers are to the point where it's not worth it to shut it off just to wait for it to come back on again because we rely on computers throughout the day (it's not like the old days where you sat down to "use the computer"... nowadays, often times, you sit down and look up a couple things, then go away)

Yeah, and depends on the watts pulled off the running power supply. (Typically 250w+) For a full sized computer, turn it off to save the $$$. If you need to leave it on find one that draws very low wattage. (Like a pico-ITX-based system 60-120w.)

It's better to turn them off, they do spend alot of electricity. But it is your choose.

It depends on how old your computer is. The older the computer the more electricity it uses. Also it is always better to leave your computer off to save electricity.

Look at the wattage of your power supply.. most modern desktops are between 200-400 Watts. How much that really draws depends on your system configuration (kind of processor, number and size and kind of HDDs, etc). If it stays up and running it probably draw at least half the wattage rating on the PS. So at minimum, that 100W/hr. After 10 hours of running, thats1 kWh. I say turn it off when you aren't using it. They also generate heat when running (hence the fans, etc) which can heat up a room, causing you to use even more electricity to keep your home cool.
