How to clean a computer screen?

How do i clean my computer screen?

  • My screen is really dirty. It has some stains (?) and lots of dust on it. How can I clean it? I don't just want to wipe stuff off, since when I do that, they tend to just accumulate at edges of the screen, and don't actually go anywhere. Anyway, is htere some sort of cleaning liquid? Btw, my computer is a laptop, so I guess it's LCD screen (?).

  • Answer:

Cleaning Your LCD Screen The major computer outlet stores are now starting to carry LCD cleaners for Flat Panel Monitors and Notebooks that do not contain the chemicals found in some commercial glass cleaners. These cleaners will definitely do the job nicely, but you do have to purchase them. If you do not wish to purchase these factory made cleaners, then you can clean your LCD Screen in the following manner. What You Can Use Water. Water with a tiny amount of soft liquid soap. Isopropyl Alcohol. Hexane. Petroleum Benzine. Commercial glass cleaners that do not contain ammonia. What You Should Avoid Acetone. Ammonia. Ethyl acid. Ethyl Alcohol. Methyl chloride. Toluene. Commercial glass cleaners containing ammonia. How You Should Do It You should clean your LCD Screen display by applying the cleaner to a soft, clean cloth. Then you should wipe the cloth across the display from left to right, moving from the top of the display down to the bottom of the display. If your display contains grease or some other contaminant, then you should dampen your cloth with water instead of a commercial cleaner as the cleaner may smear the contaminants across the screen.

There are specific cleaners that you can buy for LCD screens that are safe and won't harm the surface. You can also use a slightly damp towel with diluted mild hand soap to remove the stains. Be sure not to use anything with ammonia in it, as that will damage the screen surface and make permanant streaks. Anti-static dryer sheets are useful for removing dust and slowing build-up. Be sure that anytime you clean the screen that you have the monitor OFF to prevent unnecessary damage.

As Real As It Gets

Very small amounts of water won't hurt it.

I tend to lick my screen every week (usually on Friday afternoons after coming back from a boozy lunch at the pub...)

Grab a small bowl and mix in 3 parts windex and 1 part vaseline. mix this together and use a high quality terry cloth and wipe in circles on your screen which is what you should not do. And thank you classic for the details. It is great to know that I can use ethyl alcohol on my screens this may be useful.

Careful with the answers you will receive with this question. The smart thing to do is to follow the instruction that came with your equipment, they have a "Mild none abrasive wipe that is recommended for most types of LCD monitors. Always be careful if you don't want to end up with a cloudy screen.

try to use windex...but fold the screen all the way back

I bought some anti-static wipes from Walmart. You can find these wipes (which can be used to clean monitors, computer screens, keyboards, printers, any computer stuff) in the computer section at Walmart. You can also buy these cleaning wipes at BestBuy, Fry's, Compusa, but I have found Wal-Mart to be the cheapest.
